How to Choose the Right Library Barcode Label Material: Teslin vs BOPP vs Thermal Paper

Not all barcode labels are created equal. The material your library barcode label is made of directly affects how long it lasts, how well it holds up to handling, and how much you'll spend per label. Here's what you need to know about the three main options.

Teslin (Laminated Synthetic)

Teslin is a synthetic, paper-like material made by PPG Industries. When used as a mid-ply in a laminated label construction — sandwiched between a printed face and a protective overlaminate — it creates an exceptionally durable label.

Why libraries love it:

  • Tear-resistant and virtually indestructible under normal library use
  • Resistant to moisture, spills, and repeated handling
  • Acid-free adhesive won't damage book covers over time
  • Matte or gloss overlaminate options available
  • Will outlast the item it's applied to

BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) / Thermal Transfer Synthetic

BOPP is a flexible synthetic film used in thermal transfer labels. It's more affordable than Teslin while still offering better durability than paper. It's particularly well-suited to CD and DVD cases, which have awkward curved surfaces that benefit from BOPP's pliability.

We also offer a VOID BOPP material — if a VOID label is peeled off, it leaves a visible "VOID" pattern behind, making it a good choice for security-sensitive items.

Non-Laminated Thermal Paper

Paper barcode labels are the most economical option. They print cleanly, adhere well, and work with all standard symbologies. The trade-off is durability — paper labels can tear, fade with exposure to light and moisture, and won't hold up as well on high-circulation items over many years.

Best used for: lower-circulation reference items, temporary labels, archival materials that don't circulate, or situations where budget is the primary constraint.
